Section 38-A Parish Magazines

Description of 38-A Parish Magazines

1. & 2. Parish magazine from May 1915 - Front and back pages only so maybe the magazine was a single page printed on the reverse. Of note is the mention of the Leeds University O.T.C. (Officers' Training Corps) attending Matins, with 80 being present. Perhaps they were camped in Bramham Park for training purposes over the Easter weekend. A very comprehensive website page can be found here - describing the history of the Leeds University O.T.C. with a roll of honour from World War One.

3. & 4. Parish magazine from January 1925 - Front and back pages. Of note is the mention of a Parish Nurse - Nurse Smith .The magazine was printed by Henry Crossley of Wetherby. The Vicar is The Rev. Edward G. Wadeson, M.A.

5. Parish magazine from April 1928. The Parish Nurse is now Nurse Mackenzie with an address of Brown's Hotel, Wetherby Road. The Vicar has changed to The Rev. F.W. Hicks.

6. Parish magazine of August 1935. The Vicar is The Rev. F.W. Hicks. The price is 2d and the nurse is now a District Nurse - Hicks.

7. The back page tells us the story of the Rev. Hicks arriving in Malta on Sunday July 14th 1935. Why he is there isn't stated - maybe a working holiday or relief visit to spell the Anglican Clergy on Malta. More information on Canon Hicks' time in Malta to be found here

8. - 19. Magazine of January 1954. This now has a price of 3d and incorporates a copy of the "The Sign", a Church of England publication. Of note is the fact that no Vicar for the Church is printed on the cover page, whilst on page 2 we have an initial paragraph bemoaning the lack of Clergy, probably nationwide. So All Saints was without a Priest for that January 1954. The magazine cover is now printed by J.W. Whiteley of Tadcaster. We now see advertisers on the back cover, possibly the start of using advertisers to subsidise the cost of producing the magazine.

20. - 23. Magazine of August 1972. By now the magazine is hand typed, an onerous task performed by Mr. & Mrs. Charles Bigland on behalf of the Church. The Vicar is now the Rev. J.R.D. Shaw and the advertisers are now given a prominent place on the front page.

24. On the last page we read that Mr. & Mrs. Bigland have retired from producing the magazine after 9 years. A new team is to take over and produce the magazine, so this issue is the last of the Bigland productions.

Please note we have magazines in the physical archive from 1995 to 2003.
